Risk Management & Motorway Coaching
Risk is invisible. Good coaching makes it visible.
Risk = Time + Space + Decision
Risk management is not about reacting fast.
It is about **seeing early, planning early, and creating space**.
Common Teaching Mistakes:
- Giving instructions too late
- Over-controlling instead of coaching
- Not agreeing responsibility level
Anticipation
Seeing risk before it becomes danger.
- "What might happen next?"
- "If that car moves, what will you do?"
- "Where is your escape space?"
Part 3 Tip:
Let pupil predict. Don't tell. Ask.
Defensive Driving
Protecting yourself from others' mistakes.
- "Is that driver stable?"
- "How can you increase your safety bubble?"
- "What space can you create?"
Examiner Lens:
Are you developing thinking, or just controlling?
Motorway Coaching
Motorway is not about speed. It is about judgement under pressure.
Joining
Speed matching + gap judgement.
- "What speed do you need?"
- "Where is your gap?"
- "If there is no gap, what is your backup plan?"
Agree responsibility:
“I will monitor mirrors. You focus on speed.”
Lane Discipline
Planning early + safe overtaking.
- "Why move right?"
- "When should you move back left?"
- "What are you checking before lane change?"
Keep left unless overtaking.
Teach judgement, not rule memorising.
